Cheetahs director of rugby Frans Steyn has moved to calm rumours that former teammate Sbu Nkosi is on the verge of reviving his career in Bloemfontein.

Rumours earlier this week suggest that Nkosi would start training with the Cheetahs with a view to earning a one-year contract to play in the SA Cup and Currie Cup.

However, according to News24, the tentative window for Nkosi’s trial has been pushed back to the end of the month.

The Cheetahs started training this week ahead of the SA Cup, the domestic pre-Currie Cup tournament that starts in March.

Steyn, who played alongside Nkosi when the Springboks won the 2019 World Cup, is reportedly speaking to as many of the winger’s former coaches as he can, to determine his suitability with the Cheetahs.

The Cheetahs are keen to do as much homework as possible, before splashing the cash on the former Bulls and Sharks speedster.

Nkosi, whose off-field problems are well-documented, reached a mutual agreement with the Bulls to terminate his contract early last June.

His one-season stint at the Bulls ended under a cloud after he took a not-so-subtle dig at the Vodacom Bulls on his social media page, while touring with the World XV in England.

That was the final straw for director of rugby Jake White, who responded with a damning public assessment on Nkosi’s form, as well as the Springbok winger’s future at the Pretoria outfit.
