The Sharks have significantly strengthened their squad by putting deals in place to sign two World Cup winners next season.

Sunday newspaper Rapport first reported that the Sharks were targeting Andre Esterhuizen and Trevor Nyakane as two important additions to next season’s squad.

According to RugbyPass, agreements are in place for both World Cup-winning Springboks to join the Sharks, in a massive boost to coach John Plumtree’s plans for the team.

Esterhuizen can fill the spot vacated by Rohan Janse van Rensburg, who recently completed a short-term mid-season move to Canon Eagles after less than two seasons with the Sharks.

The 29-year-old centre, who started his professional career in Durban, was under contract with Harlequins until June 2025 and the Sharks have had to pay a significant fee – reported to be in the region of £500,000 (R11 million) – to get him released.

According to the report, the Sharks were also interested in signing Jan Serfontein, who decided to extend his contract with French club Montpellier.

Meanwhile, it appears that the Sharks convinced Nyakane to turn down a return to the Vodacom Bulls and instead take up a move to Durban.

Able to play on both sides of the scrum, the veteran prop, who turns 35 in May, will add a huge amount of experience to a youthful front row at Kings Park, while he is also reported to be interested in starting his transition into coaching.
