Rassie Erasmus is waiting for feedback from Racing 92 before deciding whether to keep Siya Kolisi as Springbok captain.

Erasmus this week revealed that Kolisi might not captain the Springboks this year, as he prefers a South African-based candidate to lead the team.

SA Rugby also prefers a locally-based Bok captain as it makes it easier to facilitate communication and fulfil commercial obligations.

Kolisi moved to Paris to join Racing 92 after the World Cup and while his contract does not prevent him from playing for the Springboks, it may be difficult for him to liaise with Erasmus in person.

According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, Erasmus wants assurances from Racing that the club won’t stop Kolisi from attending Springbok training camps and that he will be released in time to prepare for Test matches.

If Racing agrees to release Kolisi for camps that might fall outside the Test window, then the Bok management would be willing to make an exception and keep him as captain.

Kolisi will, however, miss the opening Test of the year against Wales in Twickenham, as the 22 June match falls outside World Rugby’s official July Test window.
