SA Rugby will hold talks about Ricardo Duarttee’s future with the Blitzboks this week as South Africa’s reigning Sevens Player of the Year returns from a short stint in Russia.

According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, SA Rugby will meet with the Blitzbok coaches this week about Duarttee’s future with the team, and will also hold discussions with the player when he returns from Russia this month.

Duarttee still has a national sevens contract, after being exiled from the Springbok Sevens squad after withdrawing from the team in Vancouver.

The maverick playmaker landed himself in hot water after withdrawing from the Blitzboks squad for the North American leg of the Sevens Series following a reported disagreement with coaches over his role in the team.

Despite being named SA Rugby’s Sevens Player of the Year for 2023 at the official awards ceremony held after the North American leg, Duarttee joined Russian sevens team Narvskaya Zastava, coached by former Blitzbok Vuyo Zangqa.

The 2023 World Rugby Sevens Rookie of the Year was left out of the Springbok Sevens squad that played in the most recent series tournament in Hong Kong, with his future still undecided as the team prepares for the final two tournaments in Singapore and Madrid.
