SA Rugby has confirmed that they are searching for a new head of rugby, with Western Province’s Dave Wessels reported to be in the running for the role.

With Rassie Erasmus stepping down from his role as director of rugby to focus on his duties as Springbok head coach, SA Rugby is looking for a new head of rugby.

The head of rugby will be taking on most of Erasmus’ previous responsibilities, including overseeing the coaching structures at all levels of South African rugby.

According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, Wessels, currently the head of Western Province Rugby, is a strong contender for the role.

Wessels was appointed in his current position by SA Rugby in May 2022. He has previously served as head coach of the Melbourne Rebels and Western Force. an assistant coach at the Brumbies and UCT Ikeys and a defensive consultant at the Stormers.

His experience has been key to helping Western Province Rugby through its period of administration.

Former Springbok flyhalf and SA Rugby’s current high-performance manager Louis Koen is also in consideration for the role.
