Ulster coach Dan McFarland is ready to step away from his position after Sunday’s last-minute defeat to Ospreys, according to reports in Ireland.

The Irish Independent reported that McFarland will inform Ulster’s squad of his decision on Wednesday morning, bringing an end to his six-year tenure with the Belfast team.

McFarland has been under pressure after Ulster failed to progress to the Champions Cup playoffs and Sunday’s loss to Ospreys in Swansea – a third defeat in five games – has ramped that pressure up.

Ulster currently sit in eighth place in the Vodacom URC, but are just five points ahead of the 11th-placed Lions, and host Dragons next Saturday before a trip to South Africa to take on the DHL Stormers and Sharks at the end of March.

McFarland was appointed as Ulster in 2018 after serving as an assistant coach with Glasgow Warriors and Scotland. He guided Ulster to a PRO 14 final in 2019-20 and the Vodacom URC semi-finals in 2021-22, when they were knocked out by eventual champions the Stormers in Cape Town.
