Mzwandile Stick said “the best team in the world is the one that wins the World Cup”, as the Springbok assistant coach sets the stage for an epic July series against Ireland in SA.

The Boks kick off the 2024 season on 22 June against Wales in London before returning home for two Tests against Andy Farrell’s troops on 6 and 13 July, in Pretoria and Durban respectively.

Former players and pundits worldwide are having a field day debating whether South Africa or Ireland is the leading team on the planet, and double world champion Stick has weighed in.

“I don’t think we’ve got anything to prove to anyone,” he was quoted by Sport24 following the SA Rugby 2023 Awards in Johannesburg on Thursday.

“Everyone has a right to an opinion, but I think it was the English playing their mind games on the Irish [when calling them the best side in the world].

“One thing I do know is that the best team in the world is the one that won the World Cup and I’m not going to entertain the other things on the side.

“We’re not going to fall into the trap, and the fact that the Ireland series is sold out is a massive thing, and it’s good for the game. It’s games that people want to see and watch.”

Rassie Erasmus on Tuesday introduced Tony Brown and Jerry Flannery, who will take charge of the Bok defence and attack respectively, as the focus turns to another World Cup cycle.

Stick believes they bring a fresh perspective from different rugby environments, and will help the back-to-back champions achieve a three-peat in 2027.

“They deserve that opportunity in our team and they’re well-respected individuals,” he added.

“Jerry has played for Ireland and Tony has played for New Zealand, from where they come with extensive coaching experience.

“They’re experienced in their work and it’s good to have new faces because if we’re going to do the same things, we can’t expect to win. Other teams will figure us out and we need to evolve.”
