Veteran campaigner Brok Harris is contemplating extending his professional career with another season for the DHL Stormers.

Celebrating his 39th birthday on Thursday, Harris, who also enjoyed a seven-year stint with Welsh side Dragons, disclosed to Netwerk24 that discussions with Stormers head coach John Dobson are under way.

Dobson, acknowledging Harris as “probably the biggest WP man,” is encouraging him to continue. Harris, currently balancing player and coaching roles with the Capetonians, emphasises the importance of not obstructing young players’ opportunities.

Harris, too, recognises the need to know when to retire, and credits the team’s front-row depth for making the decision easier.

“I said at the start of this season that this would be my last one and that I would like to get involved in coaching full time, but at this stage I feel really good and Dobbo are now pushing me a bit to see if I might play another season,” he told Netwerk24.

“Now I have to sit down and talk to him and see how things look, and how my coaching plans fit into the picture and all that stuff. I just have to have everything on the table first and then decide.

“If I had to play week after week, the question would be whether my body would be able to hold out. However, there is so much depth in every position here that that will not be the case.”

Dobson praises Harris’s dedication, describing him as a wonderful person and technically proficient, highlighting his vital role in the team.

“He is just so dedicated, such a wonderful person, technically good and still in the top half of our fittest and most mobile props,” Dobson added.

Harris is expected to play a crucial role in the Vodacom URC derby against the Vodacom Bulls on 2 March.
