Johan le Roux, the new CEO of the DHL Stormers, is determined to steer the team towards further prosperity while maintaining financial stability.

As a key figure in the Red Disa Consortium and head of Fynbos Ekwiteit, Le Roux assumed the role on Tuesday following a successful equity deal.

In an exclusive interview with Rugby 365‘s Jan de Koning, Le Roux stressed the importance of pragmatism and sustainability in growing the Stormers’ brand.

“We are aligned with our equity partners in the need to establish solid financial foundations. Our aim is to garner support from the business community and boost revenue,” Le Roux told Rugby 365.

Acknowledging the team’s success under director of rugby John Dobson, who guided the Capetonians to back-to-back home finals in the Vodacom URC and quarter-finals of the 2022-23 Champions Cup, Le Roux emphasised the significance of delivering a winning product both on and off the field.

“We’re not about big-money signings. Our focus is on reinvesting revenue into the team’s growth,” he added, highlighting a focus on sustainable development rather than lavish spending.

“We are very fortunate that John Dobson managed to take the players and coaching staff he had and build that into a winning team,” Le Roux said. “The fans are there. We need to ensure they get a winning team on the pitch and a product off the pitch that they enjoy.

“If the team keeps winning, we have the skill to build a winning commercial product around that, reinvest in the team and keep winning.

“We are not a ‘Galacticos’ or a big money team. We want to reinvest the growing revenue. We are solvent for the first time in years. We don’t want to invest that in salaries, rather grow the revenue stream – which over time, will be reinvested in the team.”
