Dylan Sage has started a trial period with the Blitzboks during which the 2018 Sevens Player of the Year hopes to earn a return to the squad.

Sage has been playing in the third tier of French rugby, having moved to Europe in 2020.

According to Netwerk24, the 32-year-old has returned to Stellenbosch on a trial basis with the Blitzboks, during which he hopes to seal a permanent return to the team.

Sage played 26 Sevens Series tournaments between 2015 and 2019, winning back-to-back Series titles in 2017 and 2018. He was named Sevens Player of the Year in 2018 and also helped the Blitzboks earn a bronze medal in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero.

Having played his last tournament for the Blitzboks in the 2018 Cape Town Sevens, Sage switched to fifteens with the Vodacom Bulls, making nine appearances in the 2019 Super Rugby season.

Sage has since moved to France, initially playing for Montabaun in the PROD2 and then Hyeres in the third-tier Nationale league.

The Blitzboks have two more tournaments to play in the Sevens Series – in Singapore and Madrid – before the final Olympic qualifier tournament from 21 to 23 June.
