Veteran scrum anchor WP Nel is one of three players to fall out of the Scotland squad to face Italy in the Six Nations on Saturday.

The SA-born Nel, who was in action for Edinburgh in the Vodacom URC last week, won’t feature against the Azzurri in Rome, along with Sione Tuipulotu and Alex Craig.

Tuipulotu drops out after injuring his knee in last month’s victory against England and will be out for up to 12 weeks.

Meanwhile, prop Rory Sutherland is among four players called up by Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend.

Sutherland is joined by fellow prop Javan Sebastian plus lock Marshall Sykes and Glasgow scrumhalf Jamie Dobie.

Sutherland missed out on the original squad due to a lack of game time at French side Oyonnax while Edinburgh’s Sebastian has been in and out of the squad due to fitness issues.

Dobie has previously trained with the 2024 Six Nations squad.

Scotland have won two out of their three Six Nations games this season, beating Wales and England, but were defeated narrowly by France.

Italy are bottom of the table after two defeats and a draw against France.
