Is Handre Pollard the definitive choice for the greatest Springbok flyhalf of all time?

Mark Keohane, writing for TimesLIVE, hailed Pollard’s pivotal role in South Africa’s recent World Cup victories and said this cemented his status as the greatest Springbok flyhalf. Despite surprisingly being omitted from the 2023 World Cup squad, Pollard was belatedly called up and the flyhalf mirrored his 2019 World Cup heroics with impeccable goal-kicking.

Keohane highlighted Pollard’s consistent ability to perform in crucial moments. At 30 years old, he has shown remarkable impact in demanding situations, notably in the World Cup playoffs.

Although it’s difficult to argue against back-to-back World Cups, Bok history includes other world-class flyhalves worthy of a mention.

Naas Botha – During his international career from 1980 to 1992, Botha played 28 Tests for the Springboks, setting numerous scoring records and captaining the team six times. Renowned for his kicking, Botha’s tactical acumen was legendary.

Joel Stransky – Stransky is best remembered for scoring all of South Africa’s points, including the winning drop goal, in the 1995 Rugby World Cup final against New Zealand. With 22 caps between 1993 and 1996, his performances were crucial in securing South Africa’s first World Cup victory, showcasing his ability to handle pressure.

Morne Steyn – Known for his clutch performances, Steyn had a remarkable ability to convert kicks under pressure, evidenced by him scoring all 31 points in a 2009 Tri Nations match against New Zealand. His precision in goal-kicking helped secure victories in two British and Irish Lions series and made him the top scorer at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Butch James – A key figure in the 2007 Rugby World Cup victory, James was known for his physical style of play and aggressive tackling. Earning 42 caps from 2001 to 2011, he contributed significantly both as a flyhalf and inside centre, often changing the dynamics of the game with his robust defensive plays.

Henry Honiball – Earning 35 caps from 1993 to 1999, Honiball was notable for his physical approach to the position. The 1.9m flyhalf played a crucial role in the Springboks’ first Tri-Nations victory in 1998 and was a part of the legendary squad under Nick Mallett that achieved 17 consecutive Test wins.

Manie Libbok – Since his debut in 2022, Libbok has quickly established himself as a dynamic playmaker for the Springboks. With 14 caps and 87 points to his name, his ability to create scoring opportunities has made him a standout talent, bringing a fresh approach to the Bok flyhalf position.
