The DHL Stormers have confirmed that Hacjivah Dayimani will get time on the wing in the exhibition match against the Northampton Saints on Saturday.

Dayimani was named on an expanded 11-player bench for Saturday afternoon’s friendly at Franklin’s Gardens, where the two teams will face off for the first time.

More comfortable in the back row, where he has shone for the DHL Stormers this season, Dayimani has been listed among the replacement backs, which also include scrumhalf Godlen Masimla and centres Damian Markus and Suleiman Hartzenberg.

Stormers backline coach Dawie Snyman confirmed that the plan is to get the versatile flank on the wing, in order to develop his combination with the rest of the backs and experiment with a potential emergency plan to use further in the season.

“An interesting one is that we are going to have Hacjivah getting a crack on the wing,” Snyman said. “He will play there in the second half.

“It’s about giving him that opportunity because we tend to go with a six-two split [on the bench], so if there’s a crisis, we know he can cover that position.

“We have enough quality players in that position, but it can happen that you will need it in a match. If you look at where Hacjivah gets most of his opportunities to carry, it’s in those channels.

“We want our loose forwards to be able to combine with our backline players, because we have so much speed in our back row. It’s a bit of a combination thing, but it’s also about knowing that if we need a forward to cover in the backline, he can do that job for us.”

While rolling subs are allowed for the match, Snyman said that the Stormers are taking a different approach with the bench.

“We have an idea for most of the players. We probably won’t use rolling subs, if it’s not necessary. As a player you get into a rhythm, so say a guy like Brok [Harris] plays 40 minutes and the next guy plays 40. But if someone gets injured, then at least we can put someone back on.

“There is definitely a plan for the guys.”
