The Cheetahs have confirmed that Sbu Nkosi is training with the team in Bloemfontein, with Frans Steyn taking his former Bok teammate under his wing.

Rumours earlier this month suggested that Nkosi would begin training with the Cheetahs to earn a one-year contract to play in the SA Cup and Currie Cup.

Cheetahs chief executive Ross van Reenen told Sunday newspaper Rapport that Nkosi attended his first training session and has fit in well with the team.

“Sbu and his family are already here,” Van Reenen told Rapport.

“We are looking at a one-year contract for him with the Cheetahs. We will work with him nicely and give the guy another chance in life.”

Van Reenen confirmed that director of rugby Frans Steyn played a major role in bringing Nkosi to the Cheetahs.

Steyn and Nkosi were teammates when the Springboks won the World Cup in 2019.

“I also believe that because he and Frans played together in the Bok backline in 2019, Frans will play a very strong mentorship role,” Van Reenen said.

Nkosi, whose off-field problems are well-documented, reached a mutual agreement with the Bulls to terminate his contract early last June.

His one-season stint at the Bulls ended under a cloud after he took a not-so-subtle dig at the Vodacom Bulls on his social media page, while touring with the World XV in England.

That was the final straw for director of rugby Jake White, who responded with a damning public assessment on Nkosi’s form, as well as the Springbok winger’s future at the Pretoria outfit.
