Neethling Fouche and Ruben van Heerden’s inclusion in the next Bok alignment camp is a ray of light at the DHL Stormers, with Ali Vermaak reportedly sidelined with a toe injury.

Vermaak exited early in the 25-21 victory against the Sharks in the Vodacom URC against the Sharks on Saturday, and according to Netwerk24, the 34-year-old loosehead prop faces a spell on the sidelines due to ligament damage.

His absence last week left a gap filled by Sti Sithole, who is believed to have suffered concussion. It is understood that Sithole will make a swift recovery for the north-south derby rematch against the Vodacom Bulls next week, especially with Springbok prop Lizo Gqoboka still sidelined.

Stormers forwards coach Rito Hlungwani, meanwhile, expressed pride in tighthead Fouche and lock Van Heerden’s call-up to the Bok strategic sessions starting 4 March, emphasising their dedication and aspiration to represent the national team.

“I know how much Neethling wants to play for the Boks and it means a lot to him just to be able to be at an alignment camp,” Hlungwani told Netwerk24.

“He just has to seize the opportunity and keep pushing until hopefully one day he can play for the Boks.”

“I remember when I first met Ruben in Belfast. We met and he told me that he wanted to play for the Boks,” Hlungwani added.

“My answer was that I am willing to work with him. We will make sacrifices, work hard and I will do my best to help him get there.”
