Local players and SA Rugby are reportedly at odds over concerns regarding the decision to schedule the Currie Cup between July and September.

According to a report by Netwerk24, the dispute is due to an expectation of what effectively amounts to a 20-month rugby playing calendar for SA professionals. MyPlayers, representing pro players in the country, is believed to have escalated the matter to formal arbitration.

The issue revolves around the lack of adequate rest periods for players under the new Currie Cup timeline. Typically, the off-season would have provided respite in July and August.

Netwerk24 reports on a letter that SARU and the South African Rugby Employers’ Organisation purportedly aim to extend players’ playing periods beyond the customary 12 months, a move vehemently opposed by MyPlayers.

This stance contradicts established rugby norms and disregards World Rugby’s guidelines on player workload.

MyPlayers CEO Eugene Henning emphasises in the letter the significance of the Currie Cup while firmly rejecting the notion of players enduring 20 months without rest.
