Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa has raised an eyebrow at SA Rugby’s talks with the Ackerley Sports Group (ASG) and CVC Capital, despite CEO Rian Oberholzer’s confidence.

SARU has confirmed negotiations with ASG for a 20% stake in the sporting body, and during the SA Rugby 2023 Awards in Johannesburg on Thursday, Oberholzer again alleviated some uncertainties.

However, Kodwa, who attended as the guest of honour, questioned the deal’s transparency while expressing concern over foreign ownership.

“I read a headline somewhere about an equity partnership and how 20% will go to an American company,” he said.

“I asked one of the vice presidents [of SARU] about it and before he could answer me, I made it very clear that the national team cannot be owned by Americans. I am aware of these negotiations, but I have not been informed about them.

“Ultimately, the development of the game must come first, but I want to mention that the unexpected headlines made me very unhappy.”

Oberholzer, though, explained, “I think much of the uncertainty that existed among our members has now been resolved. We will give feedback again at April’s meeting.”
