News first broke on Thursday to suggest that Bulls and Springbok front-rower Jan-Hendrik Wessels was set to receive a hefty suspension for an alleged act of ‘unsportsmanlike’ conduct in last weekend’s game against Connacht.

The reports led to a widespread outcry, even from Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus, but the suspension has now been confirmed by the United Rugby Championship disciplinary process.

The statement from the URC read as follows: “The Citing Commissioner in charge reported Vodacom Bulls player No 2 (Jan-Hendrik Wessels), for an act of foul play in the 18th minute under Law 9.27 –
