Philip Snyman said the Blitzboks never rocked up against Great Britain on Saturday and paid the price, and will have to reboot in their final Pool C clash of the Vancouver Sevens.

The South Africans must beat Ireland at 11:05pm, and hope New Zealand beat Great Britain, to keep their quarter-final hopes alive in BC Place after an opening day of mixed results.

Sandile Ncgobo’s charges kicked into action on Friday evening (SA time) by beating New Zealand 21-12 but could not bring the same energy to their second match against Great Britain, losing 17-12.

Having edged Ireland 17-14, Great Britain top the pool with South Africa second ,and speaking post-match on Saturday, Snyman acknowledged the Blitzboks weren’t up to par and will have their work cut out for them against the Irish.

“Definitely not the result we would’ve wanted, we’re a better team than the one that played out there,” the assistant coach said. “We’ll go back to the hotel tonight and do a review of this last game especially.

“But ja, definitely not up to our standards, definitely not the effort we wanted to put in, and not the way we wanted to finish off the day.

“We always knew that Great Britain is a team that can keep the ball, and especially if you’re going to concede a lot of penalties and a yellow card here and there.

“We made a lot of mistakes and they capitalised on it and we only have ourselves to blame. I don’t think we rocked up for this last game, maybe went in a little too easy and the result showed that we weren’t up for this game.

Snyman added: “One game doesn’t define you as a team, so we need to rock up [against Ireland] and get back to zero. We have all the firepower and if we can play up to our potential … We’ll focus on Ireland and put today behind us as quickly as possible.”
