Reds duo Tate McDermott and Fraser McReight were both sent off in a loss to Moana Pasifika as Super Rugby’s disciplinary nightmare continued on Friday.

Moana Pasifika scored a try in the final play of the match to snatch a 17-14 victory against the Reds, who lost McDermott and McReight to yellow cards that were upgraded to red cards on review.

McDermott was sent off early in the second half for striking out at the head of a prone Pasifika player.

Wallabies loose forward McReight joined his teammate on the sidelines for a no-arms high-tackle.

This comes a week after the Fijian Drua had two players red-carded in their 41-20 loss to the Melbourne Rebels.

Scrumhalf Frank Lomani was handed a six-week ban – reduced from 10 weeks – for deliberately elbowing lock Josh Canham in the back of the head, while prop Jone Koroiduadua received just a two-week suspension for a headbutt.

Four red cards in the space of two weeks – three of those for intentional acts of foul play – have called into question the effectiveness of Sanzaar’s disciplinary measures, especially with World Rugby considering implementing the 20-minute red card in Test rugby this year.
