Sale Sharks have signed towering South African lock Hyron Andrews on a short-term deal until the end of the current season.
Andrews joins Sale Sharks as cover for Jonny Hill, who suffered a season-ending injury against La Rochelle in January.
He is the latest player to leave the Sharks, amid an overhaul of John Plumtree’s squad, which has also seen Werner Kok, Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Le Roux Roets sign contracts with overseas teams.
The 28-year-old has spent the entirety of his professional career to this point in Durban, having made his debut for the Sharks in 2016. He also represented the Junior Springboks at the 2015 U20 World Championship.
“Hyron is a superb athlete and a great player who we believe has been underrated and overshadowed over a few years due to the strength-in-depth and quality that in exists in the second-row within the South African system,” Sale director of rugby Alex Sanderson said.
“He pairs his prowess in the line out with a mobility around the park that will dovetail with the physicality we already have in our back five.”
Andrews could get his first run for Sale in a mid-season friendly at Northampton on Friday, as Sanderson’s men prepare for the resumption of the Premiership the following week.
