A seasoned SA-born Scotland international has reportedly emerged as a potential target for DHL Stormers director of rugby John Dobson.

According to a report on News24, the 32-year-old Allan Dell – who qualified to play for Scotland through a grandparent – is on Dobson’s radar amid a “crisis” at loosehead prop.

A former Junior Springbok, the 34-Test Dell is currently on the books at Glasgow Warriors after also representing Edinburgh, London Irish and the Sharks.

The Stormers have already recalled Leon Lyons from Griquas to beef up their front-row stocks in the buildup to a clash with Ulster at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

Dobson’s new position, as part of the leadership structure at Western Province Rugby following the conclusion of the recent equity deal, will not change his role within the senior team.

It will rather see him apply his experience and insights across a wider scope, playing a more central role in contracting and the development of talent through the junior structures, yet the URC-winning coach doesn’t plan to flash the cheque book.

“Our wish list was to keep this group together, and that’s often easier said than done,” Dobson was quoted by News24.

“There has been a lot of speculation about Hacjivah [Dayimani], for example, and keeping that together is not just a case of carrying on as usual, and it might require a bit more investment if we have to see off an offer from Japan or wherever it is.

“This team will get better the more we stay together, so there is no plan at the moment.

“What I like about Red Disa [consortium] is that they say the most important thing is that Western Province Rugby is sustainable. To be sustainable, we’re going to have to live within our means for a little bit. It’s fine.

“I think this team is good enough no matter who is being signed in Durban or Pretoria. This team is still good enough to compete.”
