The DHL Stormers have recalled loosehead prop Leon Lyons to beef up their front-row stocks in the buildup to a clash with Ulster at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Lyons, who has eight Stormers caps, has been on loan at Griquas since December but links up with the Capetonians amid a “crisis” at loosehead.

Lizo Gqoboka lasted just a few minutes in what was his return from an injury off the bench in the Stormers’ bonus-point victory over Edinburgh in Cape Town last week.

Gqoboka’s ankle injury was suspected to be bad enough to keep him out of this weekend’s Vodacom URC clash with Ulster and the European playoff against defending champions La Rochelle next week.

The Stormers are already without Sti Sithole and Kwenzo Blose, while Ali Vermaak is out for the season.

Speaking in a Stormers conference on Monday, assistant coach Labeeb Levy revealed that Lyons has returned to Cape Town while management searches for reinforcements.

“We are still toying with some options,” Levy told reporters.

“Leon Lyons landed this [Monday] morning from [Kimberley]. He is one of the options we have. He is quite keen and fit – looks like the immediate go-to person.”

“However, we are still speaking to various people and searching for who is available in the country and the world.”
