French giants Montpellier are reported to be confident of completing a move for a former Stormers midfield superstar.

According to a report by the Times UK, former Stormers centre Huw Jones is expected to sign a deal to join Montpellier next season.

The 30-year-old, who is currently in Six Nations action for Scotland, is reported to have a “long-held ambition” to play in France.

Jones is a key player for Glasgow Warriors, coached by Franco Smith, but with the Scottish Rugby Union under financial pressure, there is a need for player budgets to be controlled, meaning that Glasgow may not be able to match Montpellier’s offer.

Bayonne, who were reportedly close to signing Jones in 2021, have also registered an interest but French rugby newspaper Midi Olympique have reported that Montpellier have won the race for the centre.

Jones was impressive during a three-year spell with the Stormers between 2015 and 2017, after completing his studies at the University of Cape Town. He decided to join the Warriors after the 2017 Super Rugby season, when he had already made his Test debut for Scotland.
