Six SA-born players have been included in Edinburgh’s 30-man squad, three of them Scotland internationals, for their two-match tour of the Republic in the Vodacom URC.

Veteran tighthead prop WP Nel, who previously played for the Cheetahs, will make the trip with fellow ex-Free Staters Luan de Bruin and Boan Venter.

Former Hurricanes flyer Wes Goosen has also been selected, while Pierre Schoeman and Duhan van der Merwe are two of seven Scots returning from Six Nations duty and available for the tour.

Edinburgh will face the DHL Stormers in Cape Town on Saturday, before taking on the Sharks at Kings Park next week.

STATE OF THE URC: Stormers locked on Edinburgh

“We’re really excited for the challenge of this tour, taking on two of South Africa’s biggest sides on their own turf,” head coach Sean Everitt said.

“As a team, we’ve spoken about the physicality and belief needed to win in Cape Town and Durban – they are the non-negotiables. It’s now about showing the fight and resilience that has lifted us to fourth place in the URC.

“Our returning Scotland internationalists bring quality and experience, and they will travel depending on availability. The only fit player unavailable to tour is Ali Price who remains in Scotland for the birth of his child.”
