The Cheetahs are considering appointing Ruan Pienaar as head coach after Hawies Fourie received an offer last Friday.

According to Sunday newspaper Rapport, Pienaar’s transition into coaching may be expedited after current Cheetahs head coach Fourie received an offer to coach Boland.

Fourie, who coached the Cheetahs to the 2023 Currie Cup title, started his coaching career in the Western Cape and is seen as someone who can help Boland earn promotion to the Premier Division.

Should Fourie accept the offer, the Cheetahs would reportedly not stand in his way. Izak van der Westhuizen, the Cheetahs’ assistant coach, is also seen as a strong candidate to replace Fourie, in which case Pienaar would be appointed as a backline coach.

Pienaar has already been in talks with the Cheetahs over a potential coaching role, when he brings his playing career to an end.

The 39-year-old playmaker signed a one-year contract to continue playing for the Cheetahs in 2024 and has yet to make a final decision over his future, but the reported expectation was that he would ply some of his experience back into the union next season.
