Paul de Villiers received a shock call-up to the Springboks’ starting XV mere hours before kick-off against England at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Initially omitted from the matchday 23-man squad, thanks to the late withdrawals of lock Eben Etzebeth (head knock) and loose forward Siya Kolisi (hamstring), De Villiers was parachuted into the starting team – to make his debut.

De Villiers, still only 23, attended Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale.
He became the fifth Springbok produced by the Riversdale school.
