The Blitzboks failed to register a pool stage victory at the Madrid Sevens after a heavy defeat to Fiji in the Spanish capital on Saturday.

Already out of the cup title race after defeats to Ireland (26-21) and New Zealand (33-24), the South Africans went down 26-7 in their final pool B clash at the Civitas Metropolitano Stadium.

Tries from Jerry Tuwai and Tira Wilagi as well as 11 points from Waisea Nacuqu powered the Fijians into a 21-0 lead at half time, before Vuiviwa Naduvalo and Rosko Specman exchanged touchdowns after the restart.

Tristyn Leyds added the extras for the men from the Republic but it was scant consolation for Philip Snyman’s troops, who will now focus on the fifth-placed semi-finals on Sunday.
