Stade Francais lock Baptiste Pesenti channelled his inner Brock Lesnar in the Investec Champions Cup tie against Munster on Saturday when he suplexed Craig Casey, a sickening incident resulting in a red card.

It was the kind of scene not seen since Lesnar took on the wee Rey Mysterio in 2019, or perhaps Werner Kok in the Champions Cup two years ago.

The incident occurred in the 52nd minute of what was a frankly dirty performance from Stade Francais, who had already seen Pierre-Henri Azagoh given his marching orders for a clothesline ‘tackle’ that would make Triple H blush.

Stade Francais go full WWE

It was almost as if the Stade players spent the week watching compilations of the ‘Greatest Wrestlemania moments of all-time’ on YouTube instead of worrying about tackle height or on-field displacement.

“I’m seeing a real force in the swinging arm here,” referee Luke Pearce, who should have swapped his bright yellow kit for the more fitting black and white stripes, said of the Azagoh incident.

“It connects directly with his head, I understand the reasoning for mitigation but I’m just seeing too dangerous.”

He added: “I did consider going to a yellow card because he is low. However, that is too dangerous and it becomes a striking action. The one in the first half was a tackle, this is a strike and that is very dangerous. That is a red card.”

Pesenti inspired by fellow lock

That occurred in the 49th minute and it was as if Pesenti was inspired by his locking partner and attempted to one-up him as he grappled the diminutive figure of Munster‘s halfback Casey and hauled his legs above his head and drove him back before going down to the ground with the nine.

“I think we have seen enough here, that is very dangerous. You cannot pick up a guy and go down over his head like that. That’s a red card,” Pearce remarked before sending Pesenti to join his second-row mate in the changing room.

Unsurprisingly, Stade Francais would go on to lose the match 33-7 as they were already down 14-0 before Azagoh’s brain fade and that deficit quickly increased to 21-0 after his departure before Pesenti joined just four minutes later.

Tom Farrell and Gavin Coombes grabbed tries on either side of Clement Castets’ score for Stade Francais which meant they finished the match with at least seven points.
