Fiji captain Waisea Nayacalevu has left Ospreys with immediate effect, before playing a competitive game for the Welsh side.

The centre, touted as a walking highlight reel, only joined the Swansea-based side in February but has cut his contract short due to personal reasons.

Waisea Nayacalevu departs Ospreys

It’s been a busy 2024/25 season for the 34-year-old already. He joined Sale Sharks at the start of the season from Toulon, but after struggling for game-time in Alex Sanderson’s side made the move to the Ospreys in February, and he will now head to pastures new once again.

“The Ospreys and Waisea Nayacalevu have reached a mutual agreement to end his short-term playing contract with the Club,” a statement on the Ospreys website read.

“Waisea signed in February and was due to remain with the Club until June but, due to personal reasons, it has been mutually agreed to end his contract with immediate effect.”

“We wish him the best for his future endeavours.”

The Fijian was initially brought in as injury cover for Wales star Owen Watkin, who suffered an ACL injury against France in the Six Nations.

Last week, Ospreys head coach Mark Jones also confirmed he was dealing with a family matter, meaning he missed their URC clash with Connacht.

“He’s got a family matter at the moment,” the head coach said last weekend. “We feel that’s important, so are giving him the time to get that right.

“Once that is sorted, we will see where he is at and where we can go next with him.”

Nayacalevu is also widely expected to return to France next season too, with WalesOnline reporting he will join ProD2 side Stade Nicois. The centre has spent the bulk of his career over the channel too, with spells at both Stade Francais and Toulon before his switch to the English North West earlier this season.
