Following the Stormers’ 56-5 victory over Benetton, here’s how we rated John Dobson’s men in the United Rugby Championship clash at Cape Town Stadium.
Stormers player ratings v Benetton
15 Warrick Gelant: A player that always keeps the fan’s heart rate high in a positive and negative manner, but it was much more of the former today. He had some great touches coming in as the second receiver and sparked several threatening counters from deep. 7
14 Seabelo Senatla: Excellent under the high ball and won a stunning turnover in the 30th minute. Rewarded with a try as the former Blitzbok continues to shine after coming back from his horror car crash that threatened his life. 8
13 Dan du Plessis: Played a key role in the vastly improved defensive showing from the hosts and was the recipient of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s filthy trick pass to score. Always gives his all, highlighted by his work-rate that put Andy Uren under pressure behind the Benetton try line that almost led to a try. 7
12 Damian Willemse: Stormers and Boks fans breathed a sigh of relief when he reappeared in the second half after his head knock. He too led the improved defence but added a touch of class with some deft touches and kicks in behind. He won’t be pleased with his yellow card as it is an area of the game he takes great pride in. 7
11 Leolin Zas: The only change to the starting XV from last week. Zas wasn’t at his best today as he really could have done better for his attempt to score in the 55th minute, and passed to the touchline soon after. However, he showed his lethal edge with the intercept try after Willemse’s yellow. More than a pass mark. 6
10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu: We are running out of superlatives for the Springboks and Stormers star. The 23-year-old is making professional rugby look ridiculously easy with an all-round skillset akin to that of Dan Carter and Jonny Wilkinson. Today he continued his UNREAL form with another brilliant performance that included in flair, intelligence, grit and sheer ridiculousness. A stunning drop goal, beautiful touch and goal kicks, sharp attacking play and resolute defence paired with his relentless work-rate and bravery to attempt the ludicrous caps off a special performance. Scored a try to complete a rare full-house. 9

9 Stefan Ungerer: Gave good service for Feinberg-Mngomezulu with the forwards laying a wonderful platform for him. He made good decisions on the whole, too. 6
Loose trio
8 Evan Roos: Another statement shift from the Springboks number eight. He got over the gain-line with just about every carry and if he didn’t, he got the ball away with a sharp offload. He darts around the pitch like a labrador with a tennis ball while he stayed on the right side of the referee’s whistle. 8
7 Marcel Theunissen: Another standout performance from the relentless back-rower who was rewarded with a well-taken try. He showed a good understanding of the laws to score while also getting his mitts on the ball plenty and landed some great shots on defence. 7
6 Paul de Villiers: Deon Fourie’s injury has opened the opportunity for the former Springboks U20 to make his mark, and boy has he taken it. His distribution is excellent as shown in the build-up to Senatla’s try in the first half, while he showed real fight in defence and at the breakdown. Rewarded with a try. Needed something special to beat Feinberg-Mngomezulu to the Man of the Match award, and he produced it. 9
Tight five and bench
5 Ruben van Heerden: Ran the lineout well, got his hands on the ball plenty whether operating as a distributor or carrying himself while tackling well too. 6
4 Salmaan Moerat (c): Like many of his teammates, the skipper has taken his game up a few notches in recent weeks and today was yet another strong outing. He was replaced in the 50th minute but at which time he had already impressed with big carries, hard defence and sharp lineouts. 7
3 Sazi Sandi: Could not keep his feet in the scrums resulting in multiple resets and eventually referee Adam Jones lost his remaining patience and issued the yellow card. He wouldn’t return to the field of play despite a solid shift around the park which included a try. 4
2 André-Hugo Venter: Excellent with the ball in hand as he racked up over 30 metres from his four carries while his lineout and defensive work were accurate. 7
1 Ali Vermaak: Could not make his presence known in the scrums with the aforementioned struggles for the set-piece to get going. He was solid otherwise. 6
Replacements: Suleiman Hartzenberg shone once again in attack during his first cameo, while Brok Harris and Vernon Matongo fixed the scrummaging issues to some degree. Frankly, the bench just picked up from where the starters left off. 7
