Springboks utility back Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu has outlined his personal and team goals with the world champions after he made a fantastic start to his international career in 2024.

The 22-year-old made his Test debut against Wales at Twickenham last June before winning seven further Springboks caps but was struck down by a knee injury during the triumphant Rugby Championship campaign.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu‘s injury woes continued upon his return to action for the Stormers during the latter part of last year as he was forced off the field before half-time in three successive United Rugby Championship (URC) matches.

Injury woes

He is currently nursing a shoulder injury sustained straight from the kick-off in a URC clash with the Sharks in Cape Town and he was also concussed in the away match with the Durban-based outfit, this after receiving a hip pointer knock in a home match with the Lions.

Despite those setbacks, Feinberg-Mngomezulu remains positive about the prospects of representing South Africa in the international arena in 2025.

“My main goal is to show people that it’s possible if you want something you can get it,” he told Supersport while appearing as a guest during the cricket Test between South Africa and Pakistan at Newlands Stadium on Sunday.

“From a rugby point of view, I want to make the country proud.

“I want us to bring as much silverware to this country whether I’m involved or not.”

His impressive start to his Test career resulted in Feinberg-Mngomezulu being nominated for World Rugby’s Breakthrough Player of the Year award. He explained how he adapted to the rigours of the international game.

“It’s a really fortunate position I am in to come into a set-up where everything is run smoothly,” he revealed. “Your team is winning and got excellent players around you.

“It makes a job like mine a lot easier especially as a young 22-year-old fly-half.

‘Age and experience’ needed

“That is a job that requires age and experience.

“Ultimately it’s a platform given to me by all my team-mates and coaches.”

After a one-week break, following their 24-20 triumph over the Sharks in their URC clash in Cape Town, the Stormers return to action at home against Sale Sharks in a must-win Champions Cup game if they want to advance in the tournament.

The Stormers are languishing at the bottom of Pool Four in the Champions Cup with no points amassed in the standings after suffering back-to-back defeats against Toulouse at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha and Harlequins at Twickenham Stoop.

Despite those losses and a poor start in the URC, the Stormers got their campaign in the latter tournament on track courtesy of successive derby victories over the Lions and Sharks and Feinberg-Mngomezulu is looking forward to an exciting clash against Sale, although he is unlikely to be involved in that encounter due to his latest injury.

“A lot of internationals on the field,” he said. “It’s going to be a cracker. The games at the stadium [Cape Town] have become such a vibe. The crowd are doing their thing, on the field there’s amazing rugby happening.

“The Champions Cup is a nice way to watch rugby. It’s the best players involved with each team are fighting for a W [win].

“You can’t afford to lose a game in the Champions Cup as it’s high stakes.”
