The Bulls have received a major blow to their United Rugby Championship (URC) campaign with fullback Willie le Roux out of action after having surgery on Monday.
The franchise confirmed the news with a short statement.
“We can confirm that Willie le Roux – this afternoon (Monday) – underwent a minor repair in the shoulder/neck area. He is expected to return to full fitness within a short period of time as the procedure was a success,” the Pretoria outfit said.
The procedure had been in the works for some time and there was no fresh injury picked up in Saturday’s victory over Leinster at Loftus.
Le Roux is expected to be back within a month, which explains the timing of the surgery given that after this weekend’s clash against Zebre in Pretoria, the URC breaks until the weekend of 18 April.
If everything goes according to plan, Le Roux would be back for his side’s trip to Glasgow Warriors on 25 April. At worst, he would still be back well before the quarter-finals in mid-May.
The Bulls are currently third on the URC log, pushing hard for a top two place and the home ground advantage that would come in the quarter-finals and semi-finals as a result.
The 35-year-old Springbok double World Cup winner has been key to the Bulls’ charge this season, operating at both fullback and flyhalf when required.
He needs two more Test caps, meanwhile, to reach 100 for the Springboks.
