There was high drama on the opening evening of the 2025 Varsity Cup when the match between UCT Ikey Tigers and NWU Eagles at the Green Mile in Cape Town was called off due to a student protest.
Tournament organisers confirmed that the Round 1 fixture would be rescheduled for Tuesday. The game will be played behind closed doors at an undisclosed venue.

The Ikey Tigers apologised to their fans for the cancellation of the game.
“This decision, made by the UCT executive, was unavoidable due to a broader national issue, and we fully understand the disappointment it brings.
“While nothing could be done to change this outcome, we deeply empathise with everyone affected. Your support and understanding during this time mean everything to us,” the club posted on social media.
The other Varsity Cup matches around the country went ahead as planned.

Elsewhere, Tuks won 35-8 away to Wits and CUT also bagged a victory on the road when they outplayed UJ 29-13.
