South African-born star Tyrone Green had a moment to forget this weekend during Harlequins’ Premiership victory over Saracens.

When dotting the ball down for a certain try, Green took his eyes off of it before fumbling it forward.

The England-based star fell foul of the unfortunate faux pas that had cursed many before him. Catching the ball on the right wing, Green flat-footed the covering defender with an immense stepping ability, before handing off another as he raced clear to score a certain try.

Like Freddie Burns, Stuart Hogg, and many more before him, Green revelled in what appeared to be a certain try. But – like his predecessors – his overconfidence would be his undoing.

Sticking his tongue out in celebration, Green took his eyes off the ball and fumbled it during the grounding. Green’s lack of reaction to the attempted try made it obvious that something had gone wrong. Sure enough, after a quick check by the television match official (TMO), the try was shortly chalked off.

Harlequins take the win

Fortunately for the 27-year-old, this moment of madness wouldn’t affect the final score, with Harlequins defeating their visitors Gloucester 38-19 at Allianz Stadium.

This was an important victory for the Twickenham-based side, allowing them to rise to within just three points of Gloucester in the table – keeping them within an outside chance of a play-off spot.

Green on Springboks call-up

Despite having been a standout performer for Harlequins since arriving in 2020, Green’s international ambitions haven’t yet been realised – with many believing that his chances to appear in the green and gold of the Springboks are running out. Speaking to Planet Rugby last year about his correspondence with the national side, Green said:

“No, nothing yet. I’m in the off-season now so haven’t been playing much, I haven’t heard anything. When the season starts again we’ll see how things go in terms of performance, and see what can happen from there.

“It’s tough though (getting into the Springboks), they’ve got a good team and they’ve got two World Cup wins and I need to do a lot to get into that team. I just have to keep putting my head down and doing what I can do, and if we can get more trophies, more wins and better performances who knows what can happen.”
