The Stormers were unable to disclose the timeframe for Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s expected recovery after the playmaker suffered another injury last month.
The fly-half was taken off before half-time in the South African side’s 24-20 victory over the Sharks on December 28.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu appeared to suffer some sort of chest issue and Stormers coach Rito Hlungwani confirmed that he has had surgery to correct the problem.
‘Certainly not return’
“I don’t have an accurate return to play at the moment,” Hlungwani said. “He had to go for a little procedure but he will certainly not return in the next week or two.”
Following that South African derby, Stormers boss John Dobson revealed that they had taken a ‘risk’ with Feinberg-Mngomezulu ahead of the match to allow him to feature.
However, for the third game in a row, the 22-year-old was forced off prior to the break, having started against both the Sharks and the Lions on November 30 and December 21 respectively.
Before that, the playmaker had been out of action for over two months after suffering a knee injury ahead of the Springboks’ first Rugby Championship Test against the All Blacks.
It left head coach Rassie Erasmus unhappy, who urged him to be “honest” about any potential injuries going forward.
“He injured his knee before the first Test against the All Blacks and he played in that game,” Erasmus said in September.
“The next week on the Wednesday, I asked him why he was limping and he said he injured his knee last week. I wanted to pull him out of that team because he was limping, on the field even.
“That’s what our players must understand; we have respect for everybody, but we must be honest when it comes to injuries.
“Nobody who’s got an injury and 80% ready is better than a Springbok who has no injuries and is 100% ready. So Sacha is lucky that we won those Test matches because he gambled a bit.”

Boks team-mate
Feinberg-Mngomezulu was not the only concern for Stormers fans with Ben-Jason Dixon not starting against Sale Sharks, but Hlungwani announced that he has not picked up an injury.
“BJ is not injured,” the forwards coach said.
“When we finished the URC he was one the guys that went straight to the Springboks, so did not have his break. He is having his compulsory break.
“He is one of those tough players and is never easy not to have him in the team.”
