Ahead of Andy Farrell revealing who the 2025 British and Irish Lions captain will be, we test your knowledge of the men who have led the touring side.

Only a handful of many have been entrusted with the honour, but even fewer have done it on multiple tours; in fact, that number is just three – your first clue.

For this quiz, we will take you all the way back to the 1974 when a legendary Irishman captained the side in South Africa.

The history of Lions captains

The Ulsterman, another clue, led the Lions to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over the Springboks in 1974 before a Welsh fly-half captained the touring team in New Zealand three years later.

An Englishman, who has become a prominent bigwig in the global game since, skippered the Lions in South Africa in 1980, but the side did not have the same success as their last visit, falling to a 3-1 Series defeat.

An Irishman captained the side in a torrid 4-0 series drubbing in New Zealand three years later before a Scotsman was entrusted with the honour as the Lions returned to Australia for the first time since 1899, six years after the defeat to the All Blacks.

Another Scot would lead the side in 1993 in New Zealand, but that trend was brought to a halt in 1997 with a world-class second-rower going on to captain the Lions on back-to-back tours in 1997 and 2001, becoming the first to do so in the modern era.

In 2005, one of the greatest centres of all-time captained the Lions against the All Blacks in the first Test match, but following his injury, a Welshman took over the role.

When the Lions toured South Africa in 2009, the honour of leading the team went to another Irishman before it returned to a Welshman under Warren Gatland for the tour to Australia four years later.

The Welsh flanker was unable to play the last Test with a fellow countryman deputising for the Series decider.

Gatland stuck with the same captain for the 2017 tour, but famously named him on the bench for the opening game of the Series against the All Blacks with another flanker leading the side. However, the Welshman returned for the next two Tests.

In 2021, Gatland’s touring captain sustained an injury against Japan but returned in time to lead the side in all three Tests against the Springboks.
