Leinster pair Max Deegan and Henry McErlean can count themselves lucky to have avoided injury after they celebrated beating the Sharks by diving into shallow water.

The number eight and back three youngster had just helped the Irish province to a 10-7 victory over the South African team that keeps them in the driving seat of the table.

Leinster‘s win in Durban came on the back of last week’s 21-20 loss to the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld that ended their perfect run in the United Rugby Championship (URC).

Risky dive

Therefore it was a sweet feeling getting back on the victory trail for the second string Leinster, who had left the vast majority of their Ireland international stars back home.

This tour has given young players vital game time against Springboks-laden teams on the road and to come away with a win over the Sharks will have thrilled the province.

However, they may want to rein in their celebrations in future as both Deegan and McErlean were lucky not to be hurt after they dangerously dived into the pitch-side water.

Kings Park is renowned for its party atmosphere and the pools for a few lucky fans to cool off and watch the rugby have become synonymous with this infamous old ground.

The hot summer weather in Durban and the impressive, hard-fought victory clearly played a part in Deegan and McErlean wanting to jump in but the duo went in head first.

It is clear they did not realise just how shallow the water was going to be and the video that was posted on X has received concerned feedback as many feel they were “lucky”.

“The water doesn’t look remotely deep enough to be diving in like that. Very dangerous,” one comment read while another wrote, “Lucky not to get hurt. Boys will be boys.”

Others were critical of the pair and feel it was a “stupid” act. “Could have easily broken a neck. Reckless,” remarked one reader with another simply writing, “How fkn stupid.”

Leinster will now fly home from South Africa to prepare for their Investec Champions Cup Round of 16 showdown against Harlequins which will take place at Croke Park.

Should they get through that assignment the quarter-final will be their next fixture before they return to URC action with a home derby game against Ulster on April 19.
