Reports from Japan have revealed that Eddie Jones prompted some “harsh opinions” during the review of his first season back with the Brave Blossoms.

The veteran coach signed for Japan at the end of last year in controversial style after a horror season with the Wallabies and drama around whether or not he interviewed with the Brave Blossoms during his time in charge of Australia.

Jones has a great history with Japan during his first stint where he inspired the side to their greatest win ever against the Springboks in the 2015 World Cup.

However, the second stint with the side has not gone as smoothly with just four wins from 11 games all of which came against weaker opposition and when Japan did face stronger teams they shipped 50 points against France, New Zealand and England.

Results are required now

Reports in Japan by Nikkei revealed that the Japan Rugby Football Union were not satisfied with Jones but decided to stick with him, however, there was mention of dismissal if the Australian does not produce the results in 2025.

The report claimed: “Next year, when the team is expected to play against Wales and other teams, they will consider quotas such as world rankings. Depending on the results, there is a possibility that he will be dismissed.”

Executive director of the JRFU Kensuke Iwabuchi confirmed the review was not completely in Jones’ favour.

“There were some harsh opinions, but the board decided to support him and decided to keep him in his position.”

Management style

Many former players, notably Danny Care in his new book, have highlighted the dictator-like nature of Jones’ management style which is also a concern expressed in the report leading to a survey being conducted.

However, an old friend of Jones Chairman Masato Tsuchida jumped to his defence.

“With fewer members from last year’s World Cup, it will be difficult to win no matter who takes over as head coach.”

He added: “We will discuss the results of the survey at the board meeting next month, including whether there really was any element of power harassment.”
