Former Scotland coach Matt Williams has taken aim at World Rugby for continuing to allow the Springboks to bring on six forwards, after the Bomb Squad’s impact in the Test victory over Ireland in Pretoria.

The Springboks claimed a 27-20 win in the first of two Tests against Ireland at a sold-out Loftus Versfeld, their first victory over their rivals since 2016.

With the game on the knife’s edge at 13-8, Rassie Erasmus brought all six replacement forwards onto the field early in the second half.

The famed Bomb Squad once again proved effective for the Springboks, with a 78th-minute penalty try from a five-metre scrum proving to be the decisive score in the Test.

However, following the match, Williams, who has been outspoken against the use of six replacement forwards, hit out at World Rugby for continuing to allow the use of a stacked bench.

“It is not a criticism of South Africa, it is not a criticism of Rassie,” Williams said. “It is a criticism of World Rugby.

“It discriminates against backs. Our game is for all shapes and sizes.”
