The Wallabies are set to call on a rookie fetcher to face the Springboks in the Rugby Championship openers after losing Fraser McReight to injury.

The Springboks will face the Wallabies in Brisbane and Perth on 10 and 17 August respectively, their first Tests in Australia since 2022.

According to a report by Australian publication The Roar, the Wallabies will be without McReight for both Tests after the flanker decided to undergo surgery on a thumb injury he suffered in the July series against Wales.

The absence of the in-form 20-cap former Junior Wallabies captain leaves head coach Joe Schmidt with a headache at openside flank, especially as Liam Wright will also miss both Tests after having surgery on a bicep injury.

Schmidt is reportedly set to call up an inexperienced specialist opensider for the clash in Brisbane, with Brumbies duo Luke Reimer and Rory Scott, the Western Force’s Carlo Tizzano and the Waratahs’ Charlie Gamble all in consideration to make their Test debuts.

Should any of the quartet get a run against the Boks, they would become the 11th player to make their Test debut under Schmidt.
