The RFU is set to receive over R2.3 billion after agreeing a 10-year stadium naming rights deal for Twickenham.

According to the Daily Mail, from September, Twickenham will officially be renamed as the Allianz Stadium, after a naming rights deal was struck between the German financial services company and the RFU.

The contract with Allianz will reportedly be worth upwards of £10 million (R2.3 billion) per year, with terms agreed on the deal for at least 10 years.

England will be following in the footsteps of Six Nations compatriots Wales, Ireland and Scotland, who have also signed naming-rights deals in the past.

South Africa’s URC franchises – the DHL Stormers, Sharks and Lions – also have naming-rights deals in place for their home grounds DHL Stadium, Emirates Airline Park and Hollywoodbets Kings Park.

The RFU will reportedly use the money from the deal to invest across all levels of the game, including some much-needed funding for grassroots rugby.

“We’re really pleased to be expanding our partnership with Allianz, enabling further investment into the community and professional game,” RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney said.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate our stadium’s proud legacy while developing it for the future. This partnership will support us in moving the game in a direction which serves all rugby, from minis to the elites, from club coaches to our national coaches and everything in between.”
