Loose forward Evan Roos is one more example of DHL Stormers boss John Dobson’s nous in nurturing schoolboy stars into potent professionals, writes MARK KEOHANE.

The dynamic Roos on Thursday became the latest player to be confirmed as remaining in Cape Town until 2027, following the announcement of similar extensions for Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Dan du Plessis and Ruben van Heerden.

A product of Paarl Boys’ High, the 24-year-old already has over 50 Stormers caps to his name having joined the squad in early 2021.

Writing for TimesLIVE, Keohane emphasises that Roos’s decision reflects the strength of the rugby environment in the Western Province, particularly praising the region’s powerhouse schools scene.

He credits Dobson’s leadership and understanding of the Cape Town rugby landscape as major factors behind players’ desire to join or stay with the Stormers.

Keohane highlights Roos’ versatility and impressive statistics, particularly his dominance as a ball carrier in the Vodacom URC. While acknowledging the five-Test Springbok’s need to improve discipline, he is confident that under Dobson’s guidance, this aspect of Roos’ game will be rectified as he matures.

KEO: Golden Sacha has Midas touch

“John Dobson and his Stormers coaching staff have secured the signature of imposing loose forward Evan Roos in what is another statement re-signing for the Cape Town-based franchise,” Keohane writes.

“Dobson, who coached the Western Province U21s and the Western Province Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup teams to titles, has prospered as the head coach of the Stormers and seamlessly slotted into his role as director of rugby, a portfolio that includes his continuation as the Stormers head coach.

“Roos’ work rate, on the ball and off it, is among the best in the league and he has started in all his 15 Stormers matches this season. He averages 77 minutes a game and has played over 1,000 minutes this season.

“Roos is an investment, and he is one more example of Dobson’s belief in local talent and ability to nurture the very best schoolboy talent into the most potent of professional players.”
