The Sharks have jumped into action to prevent a European giant from signing one of their star Springboks at the end of the season.
According to a report by RugbyPass, the Sharks are closing in on an agreement to keep Makazole Mapimpi at Kings Park, after the winger was targeted as a big-name signing in France.
Mapimpi’s current deal with the Sharks runs out at the end of the 2024-25 season.
The 34-year-old two-time World Cup winner has been the subject of interest from Ronan O’Gara’s La Rochelle, who are reported to be looking for a replacement for Raymond Rhule.
Rhule made just two appearances last season and has struggled with injuries, having helped La Rochelle win back-to-back European titles.
O’Gara is reported to have enquired over Mapimpi’s availability, but the Sharks are close to agreeing a new deal that would almost certainly see the veteran finish his career in Durban.
Mapimpi joined the Sharks from the Cheetahs in 2018 and has scored 36 tries in 78 games for the club.
