A Springbok legend is one of six highly-rated South African-born tacticians earmarked to replace Felix Jones as England defence coach.

Jones, a two-time World Cup-winning Bok assistant coach, is reported to have quit his current role with immediate effect – less than a year after joining Steve Borthwick’s coaching staff.

In a standout group of astute strategists likely to fill the former Ireland international’s RFU boots compiled by Planet Rugby, the 11-man list includes five Englishmen and two ex-teammates of Borthwick.

Jacques Nienaber is the most notable, having masterminded South Africa’s dominant defence that led his countrymen to Webb Ellis Cup glory in 2019 and 2023. He is currently contracted to Irish giants Leinster, however, making him a difficult but desirable target.

Norman Laker from the DHL Stormers brings Nienaber’s defensive blueprint to the table and is seen as ready to step up internationally.

Omar Mouneimne, currently with the Exeter Chiefs, offers Premiership experience and previously served as Italy’s defence coach under Nick Mallett, while Joey Mongalo of the Sharks is known for his recent success in the EPCR Challenge Cup.

Jaque Fourie and JP Ferreira are also making waves, with Fourie impressing at the Lions and Ferreira at Bath.
