South African-born utility forward Jacques Vermeulen has his sights set on representing England, aiming to catch the eye of head coach Steve Borthwick.
Vermeulen, who joined English Premiership club Exeter Chiefs in 2019, will qualify for England in September under World Rugby’s five-year residency law and is applying for a British passport.
“International rugby is always in the back of my mind,” Vermeulen told the UK’s Daily Mail. “I’ve prepared myself well this pre-season with England eligibility in mind. First, I need to perform well to be selected.”

Vermeulen’s hard-hitting style and carrying ability make him a strong candidate for Borthwick’s pack, and he’s eager to contribute during England’s end-of-year internationals.
Despite his South African roots, the 29-year-old feels settled in Devon with his British partner and son. He remains open to England, saying, “If England see me as a valuable asset, I’ll back it and give my best.”
Reflecting on his journey, Vermeulen, who previously played for the Sharks and DHL Western Province, noted, “Opportunities like this are what international rugby is about. Any chance to represent a country should be taken.”
