Evan Roos’ versatility in the DHL Stormers’ back row has accelerated his development and matured him as a player.

John Dobson has showcased Roos’ adaptability this season, with the five-test cap Springbok playing a pivotal role at openside flank in their 29-24 victory over the Lions at Cape Town Stadium last week.

Roos stepped into the No 6 jersey following injuries to Deon Fourie and Nama Xaba, while he has also been called on to play at blindside flank in three Vodacom URC games this season.

The 24-year-old’s ability to play across the back row could boost his prospects of earning a recall to the Springboks, as Rassie Erasmus places a premium on versatility.

“Wherever Dobbo and the team need me, I will fill in. I think every player has that mentality,” said Roos.

“The positive aspect is that you start to develop new skills in different positions. Playing No 6, 7 and 8 this season, it’s great to have that versatility, as it adds another arrow to your quiver.”

“It has been great playing all three loose forward positions. It broadens your expertise and you learn new things, but luckily the difference between No 6 and No 8 is not too significant. It’s the same type of role within the team, and the only one that is a little different is No 7.

“I’m grateful to have developed the skills needed, no matter where I play.”

Roos believes that with age he has become a more complete player and more aware of the dynamics that create a winning culture, something which the Stormers have emphasised.

“When you are young you want to prove yourself but I’ve chatted to the coaches and a few experienced players, and you don’t want to intimidate someone by pushing them around. You are just there to do your job,” he said.

“We want to make Cape Town smile and we don’t want to be branded as bullies. Obviously when you play rugby it’s 80 minutes of violence and chaos, but it is a gentleman’s game and I’ve really tried to implement that.

“I want to make the coaches, the union, my family and friends proud.”
