Leinster are poised to unleash RG Snyman this weekend when they face Benetton in the Vodacom URC, with the Springbok enforcer finally set to make his debut for the Irish giants.
Snyman, who swapped Munster for Leinster in the off-season, has been sidelined by a foot injury, watching from the stands as Leinster secured victories over Edinburgh and Dragons in the opening rounds of the competition.
Listed under “further assessment required” in Leinster’s latest injury update, head coach Jacques Nienaber hinted that the 29-year-old is closing in on a return, provided he clears the final hurdles in training this week.
“RG is progressing well,” Nienaber told RTÉ Sport on Monday afternoon.
“We hoped to get him involved in round two last weekend, but we didn’t want to rush things.
“He had a good session today and looked comfortable, just as he did last week. We’ve been managing his workload and return-to-play based on medical guidance.
“Hopefully everything goes smoothly for him this week. I’m sure he’s eager to get back on the field.”
Snyman’s pending return will be welcome news for Rassie Erasmus, after the Springboks had to cope with a second-row crisis during the successful Rugby Championship campaign, with Franco Mostert, Lood de Jager and Jean Kleyn also sidelined for the tournament.
