Louis Rees-Zammit’s ambitious attempt to earn a place with the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2024-25 NFL season has ended in disappointment.

The former Wales winger was left out of the Chiefs’ 53-player roster for the upcoming NFL season, which gets underway on 5 September.

Rees-Zammit made the shock decision to quit rugby earlier this year, joining the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP), before signing a three-year contract with the reigning Super Bowl champions.

Having been left off the roster, the 23-year-old will be hoping to earn a place in the Chiefs’ 17-man practice squad, which will train with the main squad for the rest of the year.

Although not able to play, practice squad players can still be called up to the roster later in the season, which will give him an opportunity to improve his NFL game away from the spotlight.

Rees-Zammit has only played three pre-season matches and didn’t manage to stand out, being used as a punter, kick returner, running back and wide receiver.
