New Zealand Rugby have confirmed a key addition to head coach Scott Robertson’s support staff ahead of the national team’s end-of-year tour in November.

Tamati Ellison has officially joined the All Blacks management in a permanent role. His new role sees him cut ties with the Crusaders, who are now in search of a replacement.

The Kiwis begin their northern tour against Japan on 26 October, before heading to Europe to face England, Ireland, France and Italy in consecutive weeks.

Ellison, who was first appointed as an All Blacks assistant coach in 2023, takes on extra responsibilities following attack and backline guru Leon MacDonald’s exit in August.

The former All Black is thrilled with his full-time position, saying, “As a player, it’s the pinnacle to wear the black jersey, and it’s no different as a coach.”

Ellison played four Tests for New Zealand between 2009 and 2012, and his rugby journey has spanned both Super Rugby and Japan. He also has coaching experience with Wellington in the NPC and with the Crusaders in Super Rugby.

NZR general manager of professional rugby, Chris Lendrum, praised Ellison’s progression through the coaching ranks, highlighting his impact with the Crusaders.

Crusaders coach Rob Penney added that Ellison’s ability to coach both attack and defense at an elite level made him a rare talent.
